Home therapy of CI, or convergence insufficiency, involves performing 'pencil-to-nose' exercises. Start with a pencil at arm's length, straight ahead at eye-level or slightly below. Focus on the tip of the pencil. Slowly move it towards your nose. If the pencil doubles stop moving the pencil. Continue to look at the pencil and use your eye muscles to pull the images together to make one pencil. Do not perform the exercise by closing one eye, or by blinking, or by looking away from the pencil. You may feel as though your eyes are going cross-eyed - this is normal, and is necessary to achieve the results. If you are able to make the pencil single again, then slowly start to move the pencil towards you until it doubles again. Keep repeating this process until you cannot make the pencil single. At this point, try moving the pencil back a short distance, and try again. Do not go right back to the beginning each time the pencil doubles up. The aim of the exercise is to keep the pencil single as you move it slowly to the end of your nose.
